• = Յն. βαλανεῖον «բաղանիք» (որ ըստ Boisacq 113 ծագում է հնխ. guelē «ծորիլ» արմատից)։ Նշանաւոր էին բիւզանդական հասարակական բաղանիսները։ Իբրև քա-ղաքակրթական տերմին՝ այս բառը իրի հետ տարածուեց շատ լեզուներում. այսպես՝ ասոր. [syriac word] balāna, արաբ. [arabic word] ballān (Կամուս. թրք. թրգմ.
